Causes and Prevention of Battery Swelling

Causes and Prevention of Battery Swelling

1. Why Do Batteries Bloat?

1. Clogged Vents – A Gas "Siege"

Imagine a battery like a small factory, producing gas during operation. If the vents on the filler cap are blocked, it's like a sealed factory chimney. Gas generated during charging cannot escape, causing pressure to accumulate and ultimately causing battery bulging.

2. Excessive Charging Time – The Consequences of Over-Tonifying

When the charging current is too high or the charging time is extended uncontrollably, like overeating, the battery produces a large amount of gas, and the electrolyte temperature rises sharply, leading to bulging.

3. Plate Sulfation – An Internal "Corrosion Storm"

Once the plates sulfate, the single-cell voltage and electrolyte temperature rise rapidly during charging, causing bubbles to form early and violently, undoubtedly adding fuel to the battery's bulging.

4. Weak Welding – A Hidden "Explosion Fuse"

If the plate tabs, terminal posts, and busbars are not securely welded, the contact points act like time bombs during high-current discharge. Sparks from ignition and erosion can ignite the hydrogen-oxygen mixture, potentially causing an explosion.

5. High Electrolyte Viscosity – Pressure Caused by "Stickiness"

Highly viscous electrolytes penetrate the plate pores slowly, increasing internal resistance. During discharge, this internal resistance consumes more voltage, rapidly raising temperatures and generating large amounts of gas. This leads to a sudden increase in internal battery pressure, making bulging inevitable.

6. Insufficient Electrolyte – Dangers Caused by Drying Out

After a period of use, batteries lose electrolyte. If electrolyte is not replenished promptly, overcharging can cause bulging or even explosion, much like a machine without lubricant; its operation is fraught with danger.

7. Damaged Charger – An Out-of-Control Charger

Once a charger is damaged, the output current and voltage become unstable, causing violent reactions within the battery, resulting in the release of large amounts of gas and subsequent swelling.

II. How to Keep Batteries "Rock Stable"?

1. Strictly Control Voltage and Current – Setting "Rules" for the Battery

Appropriate voltage and current are essential for battery health. Strict control ensures stable operation.

2. Control Charging Time – Avoid "Overcharging"

Setting a limit on charging time to prevent overcharging is like setting a food limit for a greedy child. This ensures the battery isn't overworked.

3. Choose a Good Charger and Inspect It Regularly – "Insuring" Your Charging

A high-quality charger or regular inspection of the generator allows you to promptly address any problems you discover and prevent swelling risks at the source.

4. Ensure Secure Connections – Eliminate "Fire Hazards"

During charging, ensure that the connection points are securely connected to prevent sparks and prevent swelling. 5. Clear the vents – Allow gas to "pass."

During routine maintenance, clean impurities from the vents to allow gas to escape smoothly, keeping the battery's interior "breathing freely."

6. Inspect the battery casing and electrolyte – Prevent leakage before it occurs.

Check the battery casing for cracks and electrolyte leakage to avoid sparks that could cause swelling.

7. Troubleshoot internal faults – Address potential threats.

Promptly inspect and eliminate internal short circuits and plate sulfation to prevent potential hazards from taking root inside the battery.

8. Prohibit hazardous operations – Stay away from the "explosion edge."

Do not use metal objects to spark a fire on the positive and negative terminals. This is not only related to battery safety, but also to personal safety.

9. Vent gas before maintenance – Eliminate maintenance risks.

Before servicing electrical equipment, vent flammable gases from the battery to avoid sparks and other hazards. 10. Monitor the electrolyte – Understand your battery's "health indicators"

Regularly check the electrolyte level and density to maintain battery health.
